One Nation, Under Blog: Oil & Vinegar
If you’re alive in North America and have a TV or a computer, you’ve heard about the massive oil leak under the Gulf of Mexico. Not surprisingly, lots of Americans are rather piqued at British Petroleum, the behemoth supercorporation which was operating the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig as something went horribly wrong on April 20. Some believe BP should be completely dismantled, and all its contracts severed.
If you’re in England, you’re aware – that is, if you can tear your eyes away from the World Cup – that an iconic English company has come under attack. If you’re a retired English person, you’re aware that the British government has heavily invested in BP in order to fund your pension. If BP goes down, that’s a lot fewer pints at the local pub for you.
What do YOU think? What else ought BP to do that it hasn’t already done? How do you punish a giant corporation, anyway? You can’t put it over your knee and spank it. And even if it does go out of business, the execs will just sell off one or two of their villas, while the rest of Britain suffers.
On the other hand, because of a series of extraordinarily unfortunate events and possibly criminal decisions on BPs part, the Gulf’s fishing industry – and the portion of the Gulf’s economy that depended on it – has been destroyed, and an entire ecosystem is in danger of being drowned in oil.
