Sometimes, waiting in line for twenty minutes for a double tall skinny hazelnut latte can be a good thing, a great thing even.

Yesterday morning I realized I still didn’t have a feature for Halloween. I could have pulled here and there from different sites and hope artists wouldn’t mind that I featured their work without permission. But what I really wanted to do was feature ONE particular artist, someone who would really blow my mind, and yours.

Thanks to the often packed Blackbird Bakery, I found her. I perused the bulletin board adjacent to the sugar, creamer and lid bar, and looked over a plethora of ads for yoga classes and found or missing cats. Then, I noticed a little business card that caught my eye.

I went back to work at the bookstore, and between shelving and wrapping, ringing customers up, finding copies of The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, and answering questions about The Hunger Games, I managed to look up the website on the card. Brilliant. Perfect!

Her name is Jenny Dayton and her work is dark-creepy-gothic-rockabilly-BEAUTIFUL. She was exactly what I needed for my Halloween feature, best yet, she’s a local artist!

Below is a brief introduction of the artist by the artist, and I’ve also put together a preview of the work I found on her page.

Please visit her site for yourself: www.dandygelatine.com/page/page/6211559.html

THANK YOU JENNY!!

Enjoy!!!

“My name is Jenny Dayton. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, I spent the last 6 years in Alaska. I have now begun the next leg of my journey, living in Washington State. I am an artist because, for me, there is no other option. I have always drawn, painted, created, and have always wanted to continue doing so. Seeing a drawing materialize is the only thing that makes me feel content in my skin. The ideas in my art can be as much of a surprise to me as they are to some others. Most of the time the meanings become apparent long after a piece is finished. I look back on works and remember what was going on in my life at that time (which albums I was listening to) and I finally understand what it was I was saying to myself. I feel art should be a unique challenge, not a skill based solely on repetition. There is always comfort in echoes and familiarity but there are so many thrills to be had in the metamorphosis to the unfamiliar.

Thanks Thorn! I feel very lucky to have found Jenny’s card when I did.

Oh, I put up my picture of Frida, not sure if I posted it where you wanted it and not sure where you wanted me to post Mona.

But thanks again for the praise.
